HubSpot built its name as the company that treated people well, which is part of why October 6 landed the way it did. Nearly 660 people, about 7% of the company, were told their roles are being eliminated in a reorganization around AI-driven customer outcomes. If you're one of them, you have something many laid-off workers don't: published terms, real severance and six months of outplacement, all in an SEC filing you can read yourself. Make deliberate use of them. Here's what the filing says, what to do this week, and how the CRM, marketing, sales and product experience you built at HubSpot can earn money while you decide what's next.

## What happened in the HubSpot layoffs?

HubSpot disclosed the cuts on October 6, 2026, in CEO Yamini Rangan's [memo to employees](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001404655/000119312526414965/d183135dex991.htm) and in a [Form 8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001404655/000119312526414965/d183135d8k.htm) filed the same day. The board had authorized the plan on October 1. Nearly 660 employees, about 7% of the workforce, are affected.

The filing lays out the money and the timing. Restructuring charges will be $65–75 million, mostly severance, notice and transition payments, and most of it lands in Q4 2026. Role eliminations should be substantially complete by the end of Q1 2027, with cash payments made by June 30, 2027.

Departing staff get 20 weeks of base pay plus one week per year of service, up to 30 weeks. They get five months of COBRA as a lump sum in the US and five months of Modern Health coverage globally. They also get six months of outplacement services, and they keep their laptops and work-from-home gear. HubSpot reaffirmed its Q3 and full-year guidance.

The company has not said which teams or countries take the deepest cuts. If someone claims to know the team breakdown, they're guessing beyond the filing.

Be precise about the reason, because Rangan was. She reorganized product teams around customer outcomes instead of the Hub structure, and she cut management layers to flatten the company. She also said plainly that the cuts are "not driven by AI-related efficiencies." The strategy is built around AI, but the stated reason for the layoff is organizational. The memo says both, so quote both or neither.

## What should you do in the first week after a HubSpot layoff?

**Work out your severance from the filing's formula.** That's 20 weeks plus one per year, capped at 30. Then check it against your individual letter, because the letter is what counts.

**Put the deadlines on your calendar.** Add the COBRA election window, the Q1 2027 completion timeline if your end date is later, and the start of outplacement. Six months of outplacement only helps if you book the sessions in month one. Waiting until month five wastes most of it.

**File for unemployment** this week in the state where you were employed, whatever your severance.

**Keep a proper record of your work.** Write down your wins, your book and your numbers from your own documents. Never take HubSpot's data, lists or decks.

**Then give the search a structure.** Apply in the mornings, have one real conversation a day, and look back each week at what's turning into interviews. You have more runway than most people laid off this year. It only helps if it pays for a focused search instead of a slow drift.

## How do you tell people you were laid off from HubSpot?

The rule is the same as for any layoff at a strong company. Say it plainly, say it once, and back it up. HubSpot's brand helps you. Hiring managers know the company's bar, and because the filing is public, nobody will wonder whether it was about performance. Name the round (~660 roles in a restructuring). Say what you owned, whether that was a hub, a segment, a territory or a team, and include numbers. Say what you want next and which introductions would help. Then stop posting about it and start talking to people.

## What expert AI lab roles fit former HubSpot staff right now?

HubSpot experience carries over well into paid AI work. You were trained where CRM data, marketing judgment and customer outcomes meet, and that's what business-facing AI is graded on.

- **Marketing and CS professionals** fit business & operations roles (723 live, $60/hr median). They also fit evaluation work that grades AI-written campaigns, emails and support responses.
- **Sales professionals** fit evaluation and business roles where judgment about pipeline and discovery is the task.
- **Product and engineering** people fit the 1,530 engineering roles ($70/hr median) and the 1,046 evaluation & safety roles ($55/hr median).
- **Writers and content marketers** fit writing roles (125 live, $60/hr median) and the much larger evaluation pool.

This is contract work, not a long-term career answer. Still, it's income from skills you already have, and it can start within days. A résumé that shows paid expert work during a gap reads differently from one that just shows a gap. (Counts checked Oct 22, 2026, updated daily on Swooply.)

## Where does Swooply fit for laid-off HubSpot people?

It gives you one search instead of 46 boards. Swooply collects open AI training roles from 46 platforms and scores each one against your résumé as Strong, Good or Stretch, with pay shown first. Upload at [swooply.ai/ai-training](https://swooply.ai/ai-training). It's free for candidates, and referral fees are disclosed when they exist. Your résumé only ranks roles for you and is never sent to platforms. You have severance runway that most people don't. Spend some of it earning from the expertise HubSpot paid to build in you, and the rest on the search you actually want to win.
