eBay layoffs 2026: what to do in your first week, and how to earn while you look

Laid off from eBay in October 2026? What the memo and 8-K say (~1,000 roles, 9%), your first-week checklist, and how to earn from your experience meanwhile.

eBay told staff on October 20 that it is cutting about 9% of its workforce, roughly 1,000 people. It's the company's second round this year. If you were in the first round in February, or you made it through that one and not this one, you already know how this feels. This guide covers what eBay has actually said, what to do this week, and how the engineering, product, design and data skills you built there can earn money while you work out what's next.

What happened in the eBay layoffs?

CEO Jamie Iannone announced the cuts in a memo to employees on the evening of October 20, 2026. Reuters reported it the next morning. "Our strategy is working," the memo said, and continuing to grow "requires us to make thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest." A company spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that about 1,000 employees are affected. eBay had roughly 12,300 people at the end of 2025.

eBay put the numbers in a Form 8-K filed October 22. It expects $130 million to $150 million in pre-tax charges, substantially all of it severance and post-employment benefits. Most of that lands in Q4 2026. The cuts should be substantially complete by the end of Q1 2027, subject to local law and consultation rules. eBay says the savings will go back into its strategic priorities and that it will keep hiring in "priority areas aligned with our strategy."

The best detail on who was cut comes from California. A WARN notice covers 229 jobs at eBay's San Jose headquarters, according to Value Added Resource, which obtained it. The roles span software engineering, product management, design and data science, and include 26 director-level and 48 manager positions. That's the San Jose share only. eBay hasn't said which other offices or countries are affected, so don't trust anyone who claims to know the full breakdown.

This follows the February round, when about 800 people, around 6% of staff at the time, were let go. Put the two together and eBay has cut roughly 1,800 jobs in 2026.

What should you do in the first week after an eBay layoff?

Read your separation letter closely. eBay hasn't published its severance terms, so your letter is the only source for your pay, your end date and any deadlines in it. Put every date from it on your calendar.

Sort out health coverage. Write down the date your eBay coverage ends and the COBRA election deadline. Look at a marketplace plan too, since losing a job lets you enroll outside the usual window.

File for unemployment this week, in the state where you worked, whatever your severance.

Write down your work while you still remember it. List the launches, metrics, experiments and systems you owned, using numbers you can stand behind. Don't take eBay code, data, dashboards or decks with you. Your memory and your own notes are enough.

Check your equity. Look up what happens to unvested RSUs and how long you have to act on anything that vested. Ask for that in writing if your letter doesn't spell it out.

Then give the week a shape. Spend mornings on applications, have one real conversation a day, and at the end of the week look at what turned into a reply. A routine makes the search feel less like waiting.

How do you tell people you were laid off from eBay?

Keep it short and factual. eBay cut about 1,000 roles in a restructuring that's on the public record, so nobody reading your post will think it was about you. Say which team you were on and what you owned. Give one or two results with numbers. Say what you want next and which introductions would help. If you've been through both rounds, there's no need to explain that. One clear post beats a running update, and after that your time is better spent in direct messages than on the feed.

What AI training roles fit former eBay staff right now?

The skills on that San Jose filing (engineering, product, design and data science) are close to what AI labs pay experts for. The work is checking, grading and improving what models produce, and it rewards the judgment you already use.

  • Software engineers fit the 1,508 engineering roles live on Swooply, at a median of $70/hr. Most of the work is reviewing and grading model-written code, writing test cases and explaining why a solution is wrong.
  • Data scientists and analysts fit the 2,202 science roles, at a median of $65/hr, and evaluation work that checks model reasoning on statistics and data questions.
  • Product managers fit the 1,043 AI evaluation & safety roles, at a median of $50/hr, where you write rubrics and judge whether an answer actually solves the problem. That's the call you made in every product review.
  • Designers fit the 823 image & video roles, at a median of $35/hr, which grade generated visuals for quality and accuracy.
  • Marketplace, trust & safety, and operations staff fit the 740 business & ops roles, at a median of $60/hr.

This is contract work, and it won't replace a salary. It is income from skills you already have, and it can start within days. A résumé showing paid expert work during a gap also reads differently from one showing only the gap. (Counts checked Oct 30, 2026. Swooply updates them daily, and here's how we count them.)

Where does Swooply fit for laid-off eBay people?

Swooply pulls open AI training roles from 43 platforms into one search and scores each one against your résumé as a Strong fit, Good fit or Stretch, with the advertised pay shown first. Upload your résumé at swooply.ai/ai-training to see where your eBay experience lands. It's free for candidates. Some platforms pay Swooply a referral fee when you apply, and we tell you when that's the case. Your résumé is used only to rank roles for you and is never sent to platforms. It won't replace the job you lost. It can bring in money from what that job taught you while you find the next one.
