SMBC MANUBANK layoffs 2026: what to do in your first week, and how to earn while you look

Cut from SMBC MANUBANK in 2026? What public reporting shows, what to do in your first week, and how to earn from your banking judgment while you look.

By Tim Brennan, Co-founder, Swooply

If you are one of the people affected by the SMBC MANUBANK cuts, the week already feels upside down. Relationship managers, credit analysts, underwriters, BSA/AML and KYC specialists, treasury and operations people, IT, and finance: different desks, same sudden stop.

This is for you. I will keep it practical: what public reporting actually shows, what to do this week, and how to earn from the banking judgment you already have while you look. I will not invent a headcount, a severance formula, a team list, or a rate.

What is going on at SMBC MANUBANK right now?

SMBC MANUBANK is the California commercial bank formerly known as Manufacturers Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of SMBC Americas Holdings, part of SMBC Group. The bank itself says it has more than 60 years serving middle-market businesses and community organizations across California, with roots dating to 1962, and a client-first model built around dedicated relationship managers, commercial lending, treasury management, and Japanese business banking.

Two public threads matter for anyone who just lost access.

First, Bank of Hope completed its acquisition of SMBC MANUBANK's Commercial Banking Unit on October 1, 2026, per Hope Bancorp's announcement that day. SMBC MANUBANK's own site tells clients the banking relationship is transitioning to Bank of Hope as of that date. Acquisitions rearrange people even when the press release talks about welcoming teams. If your role sat in the commercial franchise, that deal is the backdrop, whether or not your name was in any public filing.

Second, earlier in 2026 the bank's digital consumer unit, Jenius Bank, was wound down. Banking Dive reported an SMBC spokesperson confirming the wind-down of Jenius Bank inside SMBC MANUBANK, and said filings associated with the closure affected 173 employees with terminations around March 10. American Banker, citing a January 8 regulatory disclosure, put the layoff figure at 161 and noted Jenius was based in Los Angeles with nearly all staff remote. Those are two reputable outlets using related but not identical counts. I would rather tell you that than pick a winner.

Later in the year, additional SMBC Manubank reductions appear in notices filed with state officials, including a Georgia filing dated August 12, 2026 that lists five employees and a layoff date of October 9, 2026, one of a batch of notices filed across eight states that day. Those are filings, not a full picture of every team or every California commercial banker. I am not going to treat a state filing as a complete org chart.

So the honest one-liner: if you were cut from SMBC MANUBANK in 2026, you were caught in a bank that sold its commercial unit and shut a digital experiment. Your packet is still the only document that names you.

What should you do in the first week after an SMBC MANUBANK layoff?

Do not start with applications. Start with paperwork, money, and a short list of questions, because decisions made on facts beat decisions made on adrenaline.

  1. Save everything while you still can. Separation letter, benefits summary, any agreement, final pay information, bonus or deferred-comp details, and anything tied to equity or retention if you had it. Export the work product you are allowed to keep under policy: deal lists you built from memory are not the same as exporting confidential credit files.

  2. Read the packet before you read the banking rumor mills. Your packet is the only number that counts. Do not let someone else's severance story rewrite yours.

  3. Put your HR questions in writing. Your last day of employment and of benefits. When final pay lands and what it includes. What happens to unused PTO, any deferred compensation, and banking-industry non-solicit or non-compete language if it appears. How long you have to review anything before signing. Who to contact once your systems access is gone. Email gives you a record.

  4. Write a one-page runway. Cash, fixed monthly costs, and whatever the packet says is coming. Just enough to know how many calm weeks you have.

None of this is legal or financial advice. Bank separation agreements can be dense, especially after a sale. If yours is complicated, or you are unsure what you give up by signing, have a qualified professional read it. Using the full review window is normal.

For the broader version of this week, including unemployment and health coverage, I wrote a general first-week layoff guide.

How do you tell people you were laid off from SMBC MANUBANK?

Say it plainly, in three circles: the people close to you, the people who can actually help, and then a short public post when you are ready. Commercial banking is a relationship business. One clear note to former clients, credit colleagues, counterparties, and partners travels further than a long open-to-work essay on day one.

Keep the note short. I was part of SMBC MANUBANK's latest reduction. Here is what I did, in one concrete line. Here is the role I want next. Here is who you could introduce me to.

You do not owe anyone the timeline, the deal politics, or a postmortem on Jenius versus the commercial sale. One honest sentence is enough.

How do you keep a focused job search after SMBC MANUBANK?

Pick a narrow target, write down your bar, and give the search fixed hours instead of all of them. Recruiter messages for vaguely similar bank roles will pile up, and volume can feel like progress when it is not.

Translate your work into outcomes a hiring manager at another bank, a non-bank lender, a fintech, or a corporate treasury team can picture. Relationship managers, the book you grew, the industries you covered, and the credit problems you stayed ahead of. Credit analysts and underwriters, the memos you owned, the covenants you negotiated, and the exceptions you caught before they became problems. Risk and compliance people, the BSA/AML and KYC edge cases you adjudicated when the playbook ran out. Treasury management, the receivables, payables, and liquidity workflows you actually ran for clients. Operations, IT, and finance, what broke at month-end, what you fixed, and who depended on it.

Then protect the week: two focused blocks a day, real breaks, and something that is not the search.

What expert AI lab roles fit former SMBC MANUBANK staff right now?

There is a lane many commercial bankers miss: expert work for AI labs. Labs pay experienced operators by the hour for judgment in domains they know, and credit, compliance, treasury, and middle-market banking are exactly where generic answers break. Think about what a model gets wrong that you would catch in seconds: a credit memo that buries repayment risk under tidy ratios, a KYC narrative that misses a beneficial-owner edge case, a BSA/AML disposition that cites policy and still would not survive an exam. That instinct is the paid hour.

As of early October 2026, a pull of public AI-lab listings showed finance and risk roles that map cleanly to bank careers. None of those cards named SMBC MANUBANK, and I will not pretend they did. They are looking for the judgment, not your last logo. The kinds of work showing up included:

  • Financial crime / AML and KYC analyst, and compliance officer or compliance & risk specialist: judge alert dispositions, KYC narratives, and exam-ready rationale.

  • Governance risk and compliance (GRC) analyst, credit risk modeler, and underwriter: judge control design, model assumptions, and credit packages that look clean on paper.

  • Financial and investment analyst, financial manager, accounting and audit expert, finance domain expert for AI training and evaluation, and financial modeling expert: judge statements, forecasts, and model logic a generalist would rubber-stamp.

No public listing in that pull used the exact titles relationship manager, BSA officer, treasury management, or commercial banking operations. Map the work you actually did. Relationship manager and credit work sit closest to credit risk, underwriting, and finance domain expert lanes. BSA work sits with AML/KYC and compliance. Treasury sits with finance and financial manager work.

One rule protects you. See the level, the hours, and the rate before you say yes. If any of the three stays hidden until after you have committed your evenings, walk away. Cap your hours before you start so bridge income supports the search instead of quietly replacing it. I wrote more on why open queues are the wrong default for experienced operators.

Where does Swooply fit for laid-off SMBC MANUBANK people?

Swooply matches experienced operators with expert work for AI labs, and we built it for moments like this one. Free for experts. Paid by the hour. Remote. You see the level, the hours, and the rate before you say yes, and a person on our team reviews your experience.

I will not promise that a commercial banking, credit, risk, treasury, or operations background guarantees you work. Nobody honest can. What I can promise is clarity up front and a team that is on your side while you figure out what is next.

If you were cut from SMBC MANUBANK, start with the packet, the questions, and the runway. Tell the people who can help. Keep the search narrow. Then, when you are ready, put the credit, compliance, and client judgment you spent years building to work, by the hour.
